Dancing History - an American Tradition
In the twentieth century, children in primary and middle schools were taught “folk dancing” as part of their school curriculum, usually in their PE or music programs, and "square dancing" was offered as a lunchtime or after-school club. The benefits of learning these dances were clearly evident to the teachers who were involved, especially seeing an improvement in social skills. Also noticed were changes in children’s confidence and alertness, and their ability to concentrate better on reading and writing. In the late 1980s the educational establishment, facing budget restraints, imposed changes in curriculum, and music, dance, art and creativity was squeezed out of the school day. In recent years, some schools have begun to reintroduce folk and country dancing as a school activity, but many have lost the qualified instructors able to teach it. CBDanceman is striving to bridge that gap in Southern Oregon with our In-School Instruction programs. .
Benefits of In-School Instruction Series
Dance is an essential part of America's Heritage, helping to bring together communities of people from different cultures and backgrounds. For young students, dancing melds music and movement which significantly enhances their social skills while engaging their minds and bodies in healthy activity. Carl customizes the program and selects dances that are appropriate for the group's age range and skill level. This ensures that each session is both accessible and challenging, promoting an inclusive learning environment. Carl talks about the history of various dances, then gives brief instruction/demo and lets the fun begin.
PE & Arts Aligned
Carl’s In-School Instruction Program can be a single 90 minute session (mini Barn Dance), or a series of weekly dance periods, permitting students a greater understanding of the depth of American and International Folk Dance culture, as well as mastering a repertoire of dances. Meets physical education and arts integration standards. Easy to schedule within existing PE, History, or Music Appreciation blocks.
Culminating Performance, Everybody Dance!
Many programs conclude with a student showcase or a Family Barn Dance with parents and the school community — a joyful celebration of what they've learned and can share together.
Home-school students can join the fun too! Home-school groups are also welcome to schedule dedicated dance sessions for their children. Whether you're a co-op looking for a multi-week series or seeking a one-time Family Barn Dance, Carl can work with your group's schedule and size to create a memorable and educational program.
Special Pricing for Daytime Programs
The In-School Instruction Program qualifies for discounted rates, especially when paired with Multi-Event Contracts. These other events may include Back to School Night, Harvest Festival, Snow Ball, Spring Fling, a School Club Fund Raiser Dance, or other evening activities that involve students, parents, and staff dancing together. Carl is also available as a caller/instructor for a school sponsored Square Dance Club, enhancing the school’s extracurricular offerings and providing further opportunities for community engagement through dance.
